Ghana Card, Payslips, Guarantors: The Documents You Need for a Loan in Ghana
KAMCCU Editorial · · 3 min read

Every KAMCCU loan application needs four things: a completed application form, your Ghana Card, proof of income, and proof of residence with your GPS address — plus guarantors when you borrow beyond your own savings. Gather these before you apply and approval moves in days; arrive without them and the file simply waits. Here is what each document proves, and how to prepare when your income has no payslip.
The Ghana Card: non-negotiable
The Ghana Card is now the single mandatory identity document for financial services in Ghana. No regulated lender — bank, savings & loans, or credit union — can process you without it.
If yours is lost or was never collected, treat replacement as the first step of your loan application, not an afterthought. Everything else can be assembled in a week; an ID problem can stall you for a month.
Proof of income: payslips are one option, not the only one
The lender is answering one question: does money flow through this person’s life regularly enough to carry the repayment?
Salaried workers answer it with their last three months’ payslips or a bank statement showing salary credits. KAMCCU’s salary loan products also require employer verification, since repayment is deducted at source.
Self-employed members — traders, drivers, seamstresses, farmers — answer it differently, and none of these require an accountant:
- Mobile money statements — for many traders, the truest business record in existence
- Bank statements, if the business banks its takings
- Sales books or supplier invoices, even informal ones
- Market or association records confirming your stall and standing
And credit union members hold one document nobody else has: a savings record with the lender itself. Three months of steady deposits at KAMCCU says more about your cash flow than any letterhead.
Proof of residence: your GPS address
The Ghana Post GPS digital address (like KAMCCU House’s own GA-105-2738) plus a utility bill or tenancy agreement establishes where you live. If the bill carries a landlord’s name, bring a note or tenancy agreement connecting you to the address. Generate your digital address with the GhanaPostGPS app before your branch visit — it takes five minutes.
Guarantors: how they really work
Borrow within your savings and no guarantor is needed — your balance is the collateral, which is why Loans Within Savings pays out same-day.
Borrow beyond your savings — remember, members can go up to four times their savings balance — and the union asks fellow members to stand behind the difference. A guarantor’s own savings back their promise, so:
- Choose guarantors who know you and whose savings can genuinely cover their commitment.
- Tell them the amount, the term and your repayment plan. Surprised guarantors refuse; informed ones sign.
- Reciprocate seriously. A member who guarantees carelessly endangers their own savings.
In a credit union, a guarantor is not a formality. It is a member putting their savings where their trust is.
The KAMCCU checklist, in full
- Loan application form — download it here or collect at any branch
- Ghana Card
- Proof of income (payslips, statements, or business records)
- Proof of residence with GPS address
- Guarantors, for amounts above your savings
- For salary loans: employer verification and authorization
- For vehicle loans: proforma invoice and the required savings percentage
Bring the set to Adabraka, Kasoa or Amasaman — or start online at the loan application page — and let the paperwork be the easiest part of your loan. One final tip from the loans desk: photocopy everything before you submit, and keep your copies together. The member whose file is complete on day one is the member whose money arrives first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a loan in Ghana without a Ghana Card?
Not from any regulated lender. The Ghana Card is the mandatory ID for financial services, so getting or replacing yours is step one before any application. KAMCCU requires it for membership and for every loan.
I am self-employed with no payslip — what do I use as proof of income?
Mobile money statements, bank statements, market association records, supplier invoices or sales books all work. For KAMCCU members, your own consistent savings record is the strongest evidence of income of all.
What does a guarantor actually commit to?
A guarantor promises to repay if you default, and at a credit union guarantors are fellow members whose savings back that promise. Only guarantee amounts you could genuinely cover, and expect the same seriousness from those who guarantee you.
Do loans within my savings need guarantors?
No. When you borrow less than your own savings balance, your savings are the security, so KAMCCU’s Loans Within Savings product disburses the same day with just the form and your ID.
