About us · Est. 1972

Ghana's happy family since 1972

KAMCCU began with the staff of Ghana's credit union association as its nucleus, opened its doors to the community in the early nineties, and today welcomes members from all over Accra and beyond — including children. This is our story.

Our journey

From Jirapa to Adabraka

KAMCCU is part of a movement that started in a small Upper West town and grew into a worldwide network of member-owned financial co-operatives.

  1. 1955

    The seed at Jirapa

The first credit union in Ghana — and on African soil — is formed at Jirapa in the Upper West Region by Rev. Father John MacNaulty, an Irish-Canadian Catholic priest, with 40 founding members.

  2. 1968

    A national movement

The idea spreads through communities and workplaces until a national association — now CUA Ltd. — is formed at a conference in Tamale, in the Northern Region.

  3. 1972

    KAMCCU is born

KAMCCU Co-operative Credit Union starts with members of staff of the Ghana Co-operative Credit Unions Association (CUA) Ltd. as its nucleus.

  4. Early 1990s

    Open to the community

KAMCCU opens up to the neighbourhood and the wider community — membership grows across Accra and beyond. All manner of persons, including children, can be members.

  5. Today

    Three branches, one family

KAMCCU serves members from KAMCCU House in Adabraka plus branches in Kasoa and Amasaman — still member-owned, still one member, one vote.

The credit union idea

New to credit unions?

Credit unions are not banks — they are people, united by a common bond, saving together and lending to one another. Here is the idea in plain language.

What is a credit union?

A credit union is a voluntary self-help organization of people, united by a common bond, who agree to save their money together and give loans to one another at competitive rates of interest for both productive and provident purposes.

What is a common bond?

A common bond is that pre-existing condition which causes the members of a group to associate together, to know each other, to have common interests and purposes, and consequently to be willing to work together to achieve group objectives. A group has a common bond when the members attend the same church, have the same employer, or live in the same locality or vicinity.

Who can form a credit union?

Any group of people united by a common bond may form a credit union — persons living in the same community; people in the same profession such as teachers, nurses or artisans; or people in the same church, group, association or workplace.

What are the aims of a credit union?

To encourage the habit of regular savings among members; to provide credit at competitive interest rates to needy members; to educate members in the management and wise use of money; to create opportunity for members to care for one another; and to express concern for the community.

Who owns and controls a credit union?

The members. All credit union members meet once a year at an Annual General Meeting, where they elect their committees from among themselves and make decisions regarding the credit union. The members, therefore, own and control their credit union.
