How to Join a Credit Union in Ghana: Requirements, Costs and What You Get

KAMCCU Editorial · · 3 min read

To join a credit union in Ghana you need three things: a Ghana Card, two passport pictures, and a minimum share purchase — at KAMCCU, GHS 500, which you may complete gradually within six months. There is no salary requirement, no credit check, and no minimum income. In return you become a part-owner of a financial institution: one member, one vote, and a share of the surplus every year.

Who can join

Credit union membership in Ghana traditionally follows a "common bond" — a workplace, church or community. KAMCCU began in 1972 with the staff of CUA Ltd. as its nucleus and has since opened its bond to the wider community. Today membership is open to:

  • Individuals — salaried workers, traders, artisans, students
  • Groups and associations — susu groups, church societies, trade associations
  • Corporate bodies — companies opening accounts for operations or staff
  • Children — through the Kiddie account, with a parent or guardian

You do not need to bank anywhere in particular, and you do not need an introduction letter.

What it costs

Joining has two financial parts, and both stay your money:

  1. Shares — minimum GHS 500. This is your ownership stake, not a fee. It earns dividends when the union declares a surplus, and it can be started small and completed within six months.
  2. Savings — from GHS 20. Your everyday deposit account, earning interest, with no monthly maintenance charges eating it away.

Compare that with the account fees many banks charge simply for holding your money, and the arithmetic of membership becomes clear quickly.

The joining process, step by step

  1. Visit a branch or start online. KAMCCU House on Jones Nelson Street, Adabraka (GPS GA-105-2738), the Kasoa branch, or the Amasaman branch — or begin at kamccu.com/join.
  2. Complete the membership form with your personal details and GPS address.
  3. Present your Ghana Card and two passport pictures.
  4. Make your first deposit — part or all of your shares, plus anything you want in savings.
  5. Receive your member number. From this day, you are a co-owner.

The whole process takes under an hour at a branch.

What happens after you join

Your member number becomes your identity for everything that follows. Deposits can be made over the counter at any branch or by mobile money, so a trader in Kasoa or a relative abroad can top up an account without travelling. Your savings begin earning interest immediately, and the calendar starts on the one rule every new member should note: six months of consistent saving is the gateway to borrowing. Members who deposit something every payday — even a small amount — arrive at month six with both a qualifying record and a meaningful balance.

What membership actually gets you

  • Loans at member rates. After three months of saving, borrow up to four times your savings from 1% per month reducing balance, over up to five years.
  • Dividends. Your GHS 500+ in shares earns a return when surplus is declared at the AGM.
  • Interest on savings — with no hidden maintenance fees.
  • A vote. At the Annual General Meeting, every member has exactly one vote — the cleaner with GHS 500 in shares and the executive with GHS 50,000 count equally.
  • Family products. Kiddie accounts for children, group accounts, fixed deposits, and money transfer and MoMo deposit services.

A tradition worth joining

Ghana is where African credit unionism began — the first credit union on the continent was founded at Jirapa in 1955. When you join KAMCCU you join that lineage: an institution regulated under CUA, registered as GAR/NC/153, that has spent over five decades proving members can bank on each other.

Bring your Ghana Card. The rest takes an afternoon.
